I started reading Tom Wolfe’s I Am Charlotte Simmons because a guy I know told me a couple of years ago that the title character reminded him of me.
Charlotte Simmons being the height of beauty, intelligence and, as Tina Brown put it, “innocent vitality”, this might seem a great compliment… were it not that she’s also naive, sanctimonious, vain and severely lacking in self-knowledge.
